Hey James, this looks like a great project. With the aerodynamics issue, have you considered removing the mirrors and putting cameras in? I've seen it done a few times overseas by people on the ecomodder.com forum, but I'm unsure of the legalities in Oz. I plan on converting an old Brumby, and that's one of the things I think I'll do if I can.

Amp! that is really fantastic. I've had the idea to go a little more on the gas side of the equation, fewer (or smaller) batteries -- just enough to get you out of the hole, run up hills, etc, and a gas motor, running a gen to power the whole mess. my goal is less power, more efficiency. I love what you've done so far. very impressive.

Its a LogiSystems controller. 156V/1000A. It has been great so far, held up to quite a bit of high-amp abuse.

Nice work, and a great looking conversion so far.

What controller are you using? Maybe you mentioned it but I missed it.

Yeah, it is true that in its current configuration I'm not going to be getting the full 10,000 watt output. I'm hoping some engine modifications will bring the output up a little.

I bought most components on ebay. I spent approx. $1000 on the electric motor, $500 on the diesel engine, and $400 on the generator head.

Great job, sorry for my spelling i'm not english, just a remark: 1hp= 745w so the generator could only give you 7500w.
Could you give where you by your electric engine, generator,... ?
And maybe price if you could??
Thanks and i repeat you're doing a great job!!!!!

Greg - The project is still going strong. I've been swamped with simultaneous projects and progress has slowed, but I've resolved to get the car functioning as a hybrid ASAP. I've begun fabrication of the generator unit and expect to test fire it for the first time tonight outside of the car. I hope to have much more progress to publish soon. Thanks for the comment, it really helps to keep me motivated when I know there are other eyes on the project.

Hey there... was wondering what the status was on your project. I just stumbled across your blog today and I've been soaking it up for a couple of hours already. This is exactly the kind of project I've dreamed of for years and I'm INTENSELY curious how you have fared.

Great blog! Thanks for setting this up!

The diesel is about 125-150lbs, and the generator head is 90.

The metal used on my 70 is even thinner than that of a 77 and I haven't seen any issues yet, I think you should be fine. I'm jealous you have a rotisserie, there are so many times I needed to get at the underside and just couldn't do any work comfortably. Did you build it yourself?

This is an awesome car to begin with, but I can't tell you how pleased I am to have it be electric. There was a long while where it was nothing but frustration, but now I get a huge grin just thinking about it. I can't wait to get it on the road legally! I hope to see many more ZEVs. Good luck

I'll be really curious to hear how it turns out with the generator in place (how heavy is the diesel, anyway? ~300lbs?)

I'm in the process of converting a 77' 280z and the thin sheet metal of the body has been my main concern. Though I'm about to mount the body on a rotisserie, so I suppose that will be pretty telling regarding any flex.

At any rate, nice work on your conversion! What a great car to have as an electric, I can't wait.
